Rumen Acidosis in Dairy Cattle: Bunk Management Considerations

چکیده

Despite diet formulation for chemical (15) and physically-effective fiber (12) minimums, nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) and starch maximums (16), and the use of total mixed rations (TMR), some degree of SARA may be inevitable in high-producing dairy herds because total chewing and rumination times per kg of rumen-fermentable organic matter (RFOM) intake declines as RFOM intake increases (Figures 1 and 2). Using RFOM intake to predict fermentation acid production and total chewing time to predict salivary buffer flow, the widening difference between acid production and buffer flow as RFOM intake increases is presented in Figure 3. Increased intake of RFOM as milk production increases is a normal consequence of high milk production, because of increases in DM intake and the feeding of higher-concentrate diets to increase dietary energy density (15).

Ruminal acidosis in beef cattle: the current microbiological and nutritional outlook.

Ruminal acidosis continues to be a common ruminal digestive disorder in beef cattle and can lead to marked reductions in cattle performance. Ruminal acidosis or increased accumulation of organic acids in the rumen reflects imbalance between microbial production, microbial utilization, and ruminal absorption of organic acids. The severity of acidosis, generally related to the amount, frequency, ...

Dairy Cattle Stresses Caused by Forages What I Have Seen and How to Avoid Them

Forages are the most important ingredient in a dairy cow’s ration. She is a ruminant and to be a healthy, productive cow she needs a healthy, productive rumen. High quality forages are the key to achieving a healthy rumen and a productive cow. However, because of the importance of forages in maintaining rumen health and cow performance, when deficiencies in the amount or quality of the forage i...

Why are dairy cows not able to cope with the subacute ruminal acidosis?

One of the largest challenges for the dairy industry is to provide cows with a diet which is highly energetic but does not negatively affect their rumens' functions. In highly productive dairy cows, feeding diets rich in readily fermentable carbohydrates provides energy precursors needed for maximum milk production, but simultaneously decreases ruminal pH, leading to a widespread prevalence of ...

Minimizing the Risk for Rumen Acidosis

Ruminal acidosis is a common disease in high yielding dairy cows, during which the rumen pH is depressed for several hours per day. There is no general agreement of the definition of the disease, and its diagnosis based on rumen pH measurement is invasive and inaccurate. As a result, the disease often goes unnoticed, and its impact is not well recognized. Surveys suggest a prevalence of between...

Efficacy of Feed Grade Antibiotics in Finishing Diets Containing Distiller’ Grains with Solubles (dgs)

Rumensin and Tylan, both marketed by Elanco Products Company, have proved to be valuable feed additives when fed to finishing feedlot cattle. Rumensin was approved in the mid-1970s to improve feed efficiency and average daily gain. Rumensin frequently is used to manage digestive disturbances associated with otherwise erratic intakes of high grain diets. Tylan is fed as a preventative for liver ...
